Bombs Away Film Festival Finale and Commemoration  August 9, 2009: A Magical Event

On Sunday, August 9th, the Project for Nuclear Awareness (PNA) and Ban All Nukes Generation-USA (
bang-usa) commemorated the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as celebrated Philadelphia's 24th Anniversary as a Mayors for Peace member.   The final installment of the Bombs Away film featured award-winning documentaries, Atomic Cafe (1982) and Why We Fight (2005), two films that trace the history of nuclear arms, and the lobbyists and companies that sustain them to this day.  In addition to the documentaries was an ongoing screening of disarmament film shorts by independent film makers and activists from around the world, including The Art of Disarmament Honorable Mention, Fabian Dominic Wyss of the Hochschule der Künste Bern arts university in Switzerland.

Nuclear policy and advocacy experts Ed Aguilar and Kim-Thao Nguyen led discussions concerning what steps can be taken, both locally and globally, to get involved in the movement to abolish nuclear weapons world-wide.  Three on-site action steps were presented, including a Nuke-Free Philly petition to Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, and a Cash for Nuclear Clunkers petition to Congress to redirect, for purposes of imporved security, a portion of the US nuclear security budget, which you can sign online.  Guests were also invited to sign-up and create on-the-spot wearable art garments for bang-usa.org's interactive Philly Fringe Festival performance, The Atomic Catwalk.
This is our next big event, on First Friday, September 4 between 2nd and 3rd streets on Market, and open to all.

This successful event, which culminated at the exotic Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, was widely attended by PNA and bang-usa.org's supporters, many new guests, and received several nods from the local media, including a segment on ABC6 Action News.  Local photographer, and PNA supporter Tim Moyer captured key moments of the day, which can be found online.
